Characteristics

Leaves up to 15 × 0·2 cm., narrowly linear (the lower the shortest), long-attenuate towards a very acute apex, entire or sometimes with some scattered small teeth towards the base, glabrous or with sparse thin whitish hairs above, sessile, erect; midrib prominent on both surfaces.

Calyx 13·5–18·5 mm. long, sparsely setose on the outside, the setae not bulbous at the base; sepals 3·5–4·5 mm. long, oblong, ciliate at the more or less hyaline margin, with a minute mucro below the apex.
Stems numerous from a woody rootstock, erect, densely leafy, rigid, glabrous (without hairs or setae), branched from the base, the branches upright.
Capsule up to 6·5 × 0·35 cm., erect, linear-cylindrical, somewhat constricted between the seeds, glabrous, pale green; beak 5–10 mm. long.
Brevistylous flowers: filaments of longer stamens 16 mm. long, those of the shorter ones 14–15 mm. long; styles 8 mm. long.
Longistylous flowers: filaments of longer stamens 12 mm. long, those of the shorter ones 11 mm. long; styles 12 mm. long.
Petals ± 35 × 10 mm., with rhombic-obovate limb, brick-orange inside and pale salmon-pink outside.
Pedicels c. 2·5 mm. long, shortly setose at the apex in flower, glabrous, not deflexed in fruit.
Peduncles up to 19 cm. long, equalling or up to twice as long as the subtending leaf.
Stamens unequal, 3 with longer, 2 with shorter filaments; anthers c. 2·5 mm. long.
Seeds up to 9 per fruit, ± 6× 2 mm., clavate.
A perennial herb up to 30 cm. high.
Ovary 6 × 1 mm., oblong, glabrous.
