Characteristics

Shrublet up to c. 200 mm tall, well branched from the base, branches erect or decumbent, main ones up to 4 mm in diam. at base, glabrous, leafy. Leaves opposite, bases connate, blade 4-16 x 4-13 mm, broadly ovate, base abruptly contracted into a flat petiolar part 2-8 mm long, often about half as long as leaf blade, upper margins with 2-4 pairs of coarse ± obtuse teeth, both surfaces glabrous or occasionally with a very few hairs. Flowers few to several in round heads c. 10 mm in diam., remaining ± compact in fruit, solitary at tips of branches. Bracts at base of inflorescence 4-8 x 1-2.25 mm, lanceolate, adnate to pedicel only, very sparsely glandular-puberulous, occasional eglandular hairs on margins c. 0.1-0.5 mm long. Pedicels up to 0.8-1.5 mm long. Calyx very obscurely bilabiate, tube none or up to 0.4 mm long, anticous lobes 3.25-6 x 0.75-1 mm, lanceolate, often folded longitudinally, posticous lobes similar, sparsely and minutely hairy on margins. Corolla tube 3.5-5 mm long, funnel-shaped, c. 1.5-2.5 mm across mouth, limb 4.5-6 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1-1.5 x 1-1.75 mm, anticous lobe 1.5-2.6 x 1-2.4 mm, all lobes subrotund, white or cream-coloured, blueish outside in bud, base of posticous lip orange, the colour running back down the tube, either bearded or glabrous. Stamens 4, anthers of posticous pair appearing in mouth, 0.4-1.1 mm long, filaments decurrent to base of tube, anticous pair shortly exserted, anthers 0.4-1.1 mm long. Stigma exserted. Capsules c. 3.5 x 2 mm Seeds c. 6-7 in each loculus, c. 0.75 x 0.75 mm, cream-coloured, angled, obscurely wrinkled on one face.
