Characteristics

Shrublet up to 450 mm tall (but will flower in the seedling stage), well branched from the base, branches erect or decumbent, main ones up to 4 mm in diam. at base, glabrous, glandular-puberulous on inflorescence axes, leafy. Leaves opposite, bases connate, blade 4-30 x 5-25 mm, broadly ovate, base abruptly contracted into a flat petiolar part 1-6(-10)mm long, up to c. 1/2 the total leaf length but mostly much shorter, upper margins with 2-4(-8) pairs of coarse ± obtuse teeth, both surfaces glabrous, sometimes glaucous. Flowers few to several in lax heads up to 30 mm long, sometimes solitary, usually corymbose-paniculately arranged on long peduncles bearing usually 1, sometimes 2, pairs of reduced leaves or bracts. Bracts at base of inflorescence 4-6 x 0.4-0.75 mm, linear-lanceolate, glandular-puberulous, adnate to pedicels only. Pedicels up to 0.5-1 mm long. Calyx very obscurely bilabiate, tube none or up to 0.5 mm long, anticous lobes 3.75-6.75 x 0.4-0.75 mm, posticous lobes similar, all glandular-puberulous, sometimes with a few eglandular hairs as well. Corolla tube 6.5-7.5 mm long, funnel-shaped, c. 2 mm across mouth, limb 7-8 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 2-2.75 x 1.5-2.25 mm, anticous lobe 2.75-4 x 2 mm, all lobes subrotund, posticous lip well bearded at base, orange there and down back of tube, hairs sometimes extending to anticous lip as well, rest of limb pale mauve-blue or pale saxe blue. Stamens 4, posticous pair deep in tube, filaments decurrent nearly to base of tube, anther lobes 0.75-1.1 mm long, anticous pair shortly exserted, anther lobes 0.6-0.75 mm long. Stigma exserted. Capsules 2.5-4.5 x 2-2.5 mm Seeds up to c. 9 in each loculus, c. 0.75 x 0.5 mm, pallid amber, wrinkled in sinuous longitudinal bands.
