Characteristics

Annual herb; stems prostrate, in overgrazed areas, and occasionally rooting at the nodes or ascending.. Leaflets elliptic or obovate, cuneate at the base, usually emarginate at the tip, the teeth small (up to 0·2 mm. long) and not ending in a subulate tip; main nerves 11–17 on each side at an angle of 50°–60° to the midrib.. Inflorescences ±12 mm. across; peduncle up to 4 cm. long; pedicels 1·5–2 mm. long, as long as the calyx-tube.. Calyx-tube pointed at the base, ±1·5 mm. long, the commissural nerves often divided low down or at least well below the tip; teeth 2–3 mm. long, tapering gradually.. Corolla purple or whitish; standard 3–4 mm. long.. Stamens ± 2·5 mm. long.. Ovules 2.. Pod ± 2·5 by 1·6 mm.. Seeds oval, brown, ± 1·1 by 0·9 mm.. Often confused with T. rueppellianum, from which it is most reliably distinguished by the venation of the calyx. Cleistogamous.
