Characteristics

Softly woody shrub up to 1.5 m. high; stem 4-angled, spreading or retrorsely hispid, densely hispid at the nodes.. Leaf-lamina ovate-elliptic, up to 16 cm. long and 7.5 cm. wide, shortly acuminate, base shortly attenuate to rounded, chartaceous, margin inconspicuously toothed, thinly long-pilose on both surfaces; nerves 5(–7 fide Markgraf), impressed above, subprominent beneath; petiole up to 2.5 cm. long.. Inflorescence terminal; peduncle less than 5 mm. long; flowers 1–6, subsessile; bracts boat-shaped, 1.5–2.5 cm. long, 1 cm. wide, scarious, margins and nerves strigose.. Calyx-tube tubular-campanulate, 10 mm. long, 6 mm. in diameter, glabrous; lobes narrowly triangular-acuminate, 6–8 mm. long, 2 mm. wide, margins setose-ciliate.. Petals oblong-obovate, 20 mm. long, 7 mm. wide, pale purple to magenta, glabrous.. Stamens subequal; anthers 7–8(–10 fide Markgraf) mm. long, incurved; connective 0.2–0.7(–1) mm. long, with 2 anterior tubercles; filaments ± 10 mm. long..
