Characteristics

Plants 300-600 mm high. Corm 20-35 mm diam.; tunics of densely matted fibres, with short collar. Stem robust, curved outward at ground level, unbranched, 4-5 mm diam. Basal leaves 6 or 7, green at flowering, blade narrowly lanceolate, 130-190 x (3-)5-8 mm, acuminate, 2-or 3-veined, narrowed into flattened pseudopetiole below; cauline leaves 2 or 3, lowermost concealed among leaf bases, reddish brown, lanceolate, up to 60 mm long, clasping throughout, upper 1 or 2 reduced to minute scales. Spike densely ± 18-to 25-flowered, 150-180 mm long; bracts green at base, dry and brown above, leathery, ovate, outer 6-9 mm long, obtuse, inner slightly longer. Flowers zygomorphic, yellow with lower 3 tepals paler or flushed purple toward base and with small maroon median streak in basal 1/3, with a herbaceous or acrid fragrance; perianth tube funnel-shaped, slightly curved, 4-5 mm long; tepals unequal, crispulate, dorsal slightly larger, arched over stamens, oblanceolate, strongly narrowed in lower 1/3, 15-16 x 6 mm, obtuse, other tepals suberect and recurved distally, upper laterals obovate-spathulate, abruptly clawed in basal half, 13-14 x 5-6 mm, obtuse, lower 3 tepals joined below for ± 2.5 mm, obovate-pandurate, ± 12 x 5-6 mm, truncate, claws 1-2 mm long. Filaments arcuate, later diverging, ± 10 mm long; anthers 4-5 mm long, yellow, with apiculus 0.5-0.8 mm long. Style ± 9 mm long, dividing opposite anther bases, branches 1 mm long. Capsules and seeds unknown.
