Characteristics

Plants 150-300 mm high. Corm 15-20 mm diam.; tunics of densely matted fibres, with thick collar. Stem slender, flexuose, unbranched. Basal leaf 1, dry at flowering, contracted abruptly into slender, terete pseudopetiole 25-70 mm long, blade elliptic to ovate-lanceolate, 30-55 x 10-20 mm, acute or obtuse, truncate or cuneate at base, sometimes obliquely so, with 2 veins, margins ± undulate or crisped; cauline leaves 4 or 5, ± overlapping, dry and brown, linear-attenuate, closely sheathing below, distally closely involute, appearing terete, free part 10-60 mm long, uppermost grading into floral bracts. Spike short, compact, densely 3-to 7-flowered, 20-40 mm long; bracts dry and reddish brown at flowering, leathery, lanceolate, outer 25-35 mm long, attenuate, obscurely 2-keeled, inner firm-papery, up to 5 mm longer than outer, acuminate. Flowers zygomorphic, pale pink, lower 3 tepals and sometimes also upper tepals with dark red median streak, unscented; perianth tube subcylindric, straight or slightly curved, slightly widened to throat, 34-38 mm long; tepals unequal, dorsal largest, slightly ascending and recurved above, others directed forward below and recurved distally, dorsal oblanceolate, 25-30 x 5-8 mm, narrowed below, upper laterals 20-26 x 2.5-4.0 mm, lower tepals as long as upper laterals but usually slightly narrower, joined to one another for 4-8 mm. Filaments arcuate but later recurving, 12-15 mm long; anthers 5-6 mm long, lilac or purple, with recurved, usually bifid apiculus ± 2 mm long. Style 50-55 mm long, dividing just below anther apices, branches 3-4 mm long. Capsules ellipsoid, woody, 15-22 x 8 mm long. Seeds tetrahedral, ± 5 x 3 mm, shortly winged on angles.
