Plants 300-450 mm high. Corm 30-40 mm diam.; tunics of moderately coarse fibres, with short or long collar. Stem erect or flexed outward basally, unbranched, 3-4 mm diam. Basal leaves 3 to 7, green at flowering, in a fan, reaching ± halfway to base of spike, blades lanceolate, 100-150 x 7-15 mm, acute or acuminate, not narrowed and subpetiolate below, with 3 or 4 veins; cauline leaves 2 or 3, lower 1 or 2 like basal but smaller, upper 1 or 2 reduced and subulate, 15-50 mm long. Flowers red with paler tube and conspicuous black or purple blotch in sinuses between all tepals, especially lower 3, unscented; perianth tube dimorphic, sharply bent, 25-30 mm long, slender in lower 5-8 mm, widening at bend into cylindric upper part ± 20 mm long, with ventral pouch at base; tepals unequal, arising obliquely, lower lateral tepals joined to upper laterals for ± 2 mm and upper laterals joined to the dorsal for an additional 3-5 mm, dorsal tepal largest, horizontal, oblanceolate-spathulate, clawed in lower half, 25-30 x 7-8 mm, obtuse, lower tepals spreading but later reflexed, elliptic to oblong, shortly clawed, subequal or lower slightly shorter, 12-18 x 4-6 mm. Filaments arcuate but later recurved, 40-45 mm long; anthers 7-9 mm long, yellow flushed red, obtuse, almost medifixed. Style 50-60 mm long, dividing opposite upper half of anthers, branches 3-4 mm long, oblanceolate-conduplicate. Capsules and seeds unknown.
