Characteristics

Plants 1000-1500 mm high. Corm 30-50 mm diam.; tunics of densely matted fibres, with long collar. Stem robust, usually with 2 or 3 short, spreading branches, 5-8 mm diam. Basal leaves 5 to 7, green at flowering, in a fan with longitudinally folded, overlapping sheaths, blades lanceolate, 150-350 x 9-25 mm, acuminate, with 5 to 7 veins, not narrowed to a pseudopetiole below, firm-textured; cauline leaves 3 to 5, lower 1 or 2 leaf-like but much smaller, upper 2 or 3 reduced, subulate or scale-like. Spike moderately densely or laxly ± 15-to 25-flowered, 250-350 mm long, lateral spikes up to 5-flowered; bracts dry and brown or greenish brown, leathery, oblong or oblong-ovate, outer 6-9 mm long, obtuse or acute, inner slightly longer. Flowers zygomorphic, yellow, lower 3 tepals with dark brown median lozenge-shaped streak or line, unscented; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 7-8 mm long; tepals unequal, dorsal slightly larger, arched over stamens, recurved apically, oblong-spathulate, clawed in lower half, 20-25 x 6-8 mm, obtuse or truncate, other tepals suberect and recurved distally, 18-20 x 5-6 mm, lower 3 tepals joined at base for ± 4 mm. Filaments arcuate, later suberect, 12-15 mm long; anthers 7-9 mm long, yellow, with bifid apiculus 1 mm long. Style 20-23 mm long, dividing opposite middle of anthers, branches 2.5-3.0 mm long. Capsules ovoid, inflated, 20-30 x 10-15 mm. Seeds 6-8 mm long, winged on angles.
