Characteristics

Plants 500-1100 mm high. Corm 25-35 mm diam.; tunics of densely matted fibres, with long fibrous collar. Stem slender, curved outward at ground level then erect, unbranched, 2.0-3.5 mm diam. Basal leaves 5 or 6, dry at flowering, blade linear to narrowly lanceolate, 200-400 x 4-8 mm, acuminate, with 2 to 4 veins; cauline leaves 3 to 6, lowermost concealed among leaf bases, reddish brown, subulate, up to 70 mm long, clasping throughout, upper 1 to 3 reduced to a minute scales. Spike moderately densely 12-to 25-flowered, 100-300 mm long; bracts dry and brown, leathery, oblong, outer 5-9 mm long, acute to apiculate, inner slightly longer. Flowers weakly zygomorphic, pale yellow or creamy white, tepals sometimes flushed purplish distally and on reverse and usually purplish in sinuses at base, sweetly scented; perianth tube cylindric, 30-40 mm long; tepals subequal or dorsal slightly larger, suberect and recurved distally, upper laterals sometimes obliquely ascending, spathulate or oblong-spathulate, narrowed or clawed in basal 1/3 or 1/2, obtuse or truncate-emarginate, crispulate, dorsal 9-13 x 3-4 mm, others slightly shorter, lower 3 tepals united for 1-2 mm. Filaments subarcuate, later diverging, 5-6 mm long; anthers 4-5 mm long, yellow, with apiculus 0.5 mm long. Style 38-48 mm long, dividing opposite middle of anthers, branches 1-2 mm long. Capsules inflated, ovoid or subglobose, 15-20 x 10-15 mm. Seeds up to 6 mm long, winged on angle.
