Characteristics

Plants 150-400 mm high. Corm 20-30 mm diam.; tunics of densely matted brown fibres, with well-developed collar. Stem moderately slender, curved outward at ground level and then erect, unbranched, 1.5-3.0 mm diam. Basal leaves 5 to 7, green at flowering or drying, blade linear, acuminate, with 1(2) veins, 80-220 x 2-5 mm, contracted into semiterete pseudopetiole usually, extending shortly above ground; cauline leaves 2 or 3, lowermost concealed by tunic fibres, subulate, upper 1 or 2 minute and scale-like. Flowers zygomorphic, yellow with tube and three lower tepals flushed maroon or purple in basal half and with the apex yellow but soon turning brown, strongly acrid or musty scented; perianth tube 3-4 mm long; tepals unequal, dorsal larger, arching over stamens and recurved apically, crisped or undulate, base of lower tepals and mouth of tube minutely papillate, dorsal tepal spathulate-oblanceolate, 14-17 x (3-)4-6 mm, obtuse, clawed in basal half, upper laterals oblanceolate-to obovate-spathulate, 10-14 x (2-)3-5 mm, obtuse, strongly clawed in basal half, connate with lower tepals for up to 1 mm and then curved back and up toward dorsal, three lower tepals fused to one another for 3-4 mm forming a lip, oblong-spathulate or panduriform, 10-13 x 3-4 mm, truncate, with short claws 2-3 mm long. Filaments arcuate, later diverging, 12-14 mm long, base of median filament minutely papillate; anthers yellow, 3-4 mm long with short or obsolete apiculus up to 0.5 mm long. Style ± 15 mm long, dividing opposite anther bases, branches ± 1 mm long. Capsules much inflated, ovoid to subglobose, 24-34 x 15-25 mm. Seeds 9-10 mm long, winged on angles.
