Characteristics

Plants 250-500 mm high. Corm 20-30 mm diam.; tunics of moderately coarse fibres or papery, with a short collar. Stem flexed outward at ground level then erect, unbranched or rarely with one short branch, 1.5-3.0 mm diam. Basal leaves 3 to 5, dry at flowering, blades linear to linear-lanceolate, 150-300 x 3-6(-10) mm, acute or acuminate, narrowed and petiolate below, 2-or 3-veined; cauline leaves 3-5, lower 1 to 3 subulate, upper 1 or 2 reduced or scale-like. Spike moderately densely ± 7-to 20-flowered, 50-150 mm long; bracts brown or reddish, dry and leathery or softer, oblong-lanceolate, outer 8-12 mm long, acute or acuminate, inner slightly longer. Flowers carmine to dark red or purplish, lower 3 tepals with darker midline between white bands, unscented; perianth tube dimorphic, sharply bent, 25-30 mm long, slender in lower 10-15 mm, widening at bend into cylindric upper part ± 15 mm long; tepals unequal, all suberect to spreading and later reflexed, arising at same level or upper lateral tepals adnate to dorsal for up to 1 mm, ovate or oblong to obovate-oblong, obtuse to truncate, very shortly clawed, dorsal tepal largest, 15-19 x 8-10 mm, others subequal, 12-15 x 7-9 mm. Filaments arcuate, later recurved, 20-23 mm long; anthers 6-7 mm long, purple or red, with bifid apiculus 1.0-1.5 mm long. Style 30-40 mm long, dividing opposite lower half of anthers, branches 2-3 mm long, sometimes bifid. Capsules ellipsoid, inflated, 16 mm long. Seeds 2-3 mm long, shortly winged on angles.
