Characteristics

Plants 300-650 mm high. Corm 30-50 mm diam.; tunics of densely matted fibres, with thick collar. Stem slender, straight or slightly flexuose, usually unbranched, rarely with one or two short branches, 1.0-1.5 mm diam. Basal leaves 1 or 2, dry at flowering, contracted abruptly into terete pseudopetiole 100-150 mm long, blade linear-lanceolate, 200-300 x 5-10 mm, attenuate, oblique at base, 3-veined, abaxial vein diverging first; cauline leaves 3, reddish brown, lanceolate, clasping throughout, lowermost up to 60 mm long, upper reduced and bract-like. Spike laxly 5-to 9(-12)-flowered, 300-600 mm long, lateral spikes 1-flowered; bracts green at base, dry and flushed pink in upper half at flowering, ± membranous, oblong, outer 10-12 mm long, acute, inner 14-16 mm long, acuminate. Flowers zygomorphic, pale pink, three 3 tepals each with dark red median streak outlined in white and flanked at base by dark pink streak and upper laterals usually with darker median streak near apices, mouth of tube and bases of filaments flushed dark red, unscented; perianth tube subcylindric, straight or slightly curved, slightly widened to throat, 20-21 mm long; tepals unequal, dorsal largest, slightly ascending and recurved above, others directed forward below and recurved above, dorsal oblanceolate, 23-25 x 7-9 mm, narrowed below, upper laterals 22-25 x 3.5-5.0 mm, lower tepals as long as upper laterals but usually slightly narrower, joined to one another for 5-6 mm. Filaments arcuate but later recurving, 13-15 mm long; anthers purple, 5-6 mm long with recurved, usually bifid apiculus ± 2 mm long. Style 35-37 mm long, dividing just below anther apices, branches 3-4 mm long. Capsules ovoid to ellipsoid, inflated, 15-23 x 10 mm long. Seeds ± 6 x 4 mm, winged on angles.
