Characteristics

Shrub or small tree, up to 4 m. tall.. Leaves in fascicles on short lateral shoots of limited growth; lamina ovate-elliptic, up to 7 × 3.5 cm., almost glabrous beneath except for tufts of hairs in the axils of the secondary nerves and a few scattered longish hairs on the nerves, apex rounded to bluntly subacuminate, base cuneate or rounded; petiole up to 0.8 cm. long.. Flowers (rarely) solitary, or in a 2–10-flowered fascicle, in leaf-axils or on leafless spur shoots; pedicels up to 1.1 cm. long.. Calyx 0.25–0.3 cm. long, denticulate, tomentellous.. Petals linear-spathulate, 2.3–3.2 × 0.55 cm., glabrous or sparsely puberulous especially towards apex outside, greenish white.. Staminal tube 1.8–2.8 cm. long, pure white, distinctly curved and gradually narrowed from the wide apex to the base, glabrous in the upper half inside, but with long retrorse hairs in the lower part, sometimes with a few scattered hairs outside; appendages fused for their entire length to form a frill which completely conceals the anthers (but see note below).. Ovary 10-locular, glabrous; style 2.9–4.1 cm. long, glabrous; style-head ovoid.. Capsule depressed-globose, up to 0.8 × 1.2 cm., shallowly sulcate, thinly woody, glabrous..
