Characteristics

Shrub or small tree up to 6 m. tall.. Leaf-lamina broadly ovate, broadest just above the base, up to 6 × 3.8 cm., lower surface densely setulose at first, more sparsely so with age, apex rounded to subacute, base subtruncate to shallowly cordate; petiole 0.8–1.2 cm. long.. Inflorescence a 3–12-flowered subsessile fascicle terminating short shoots of limited growth or in axils of fallen leaves, rarely axillary.. Flowers creamy white, precocious or with the leaves; pedicels ± 1 cm. long.. Calyx ± 0.35 cm. long, lobed almost to the middle, tomentellous.. Petals linear-spathulate, 2.8–3.2 × 0.4–0.5 cm., sparsely puberulous outside.. Staminal tube 2.2–2.4 cm. long, distinctly curved and gradually narrowed from apex to base, glabrous at throat inside but densely hairy in the lower half; appendages in pairs, alternating with and ± equalling the anthers, free to the base or almost so.. Ovary 10-locular, densely puberulous; style ± 3 cm. long, puberulous in lower half; style-head ovoid.. Capsule depressed-globose, up to 0.8 × 1.2 cm., shallowly sulcate, thinly woody, densely puberulous.. Seeds black; aril red.
