Characteristics

Shrub or small tree up to 8 m. tall; older branchlets slender, closely longitudinally striate, often turning reddish brown or purple-black.. Leaf-lamina elliptic or oblanceolate-elliptic, up to 12 × 5.5 cm., lower surface sparsely puberulous, apex acuminate, base cuneate; petiole up to 0.7 cm. long.. Inflorescence a subsessile fascicle, usually on older branchlets, very rarely axillary, with up to 19 flowers, usually flowering when leafless; bracts 0.1 cm. long; pedicels up to 1.8 cm. long.. Calyx 0.2 cm. long, sparsely sericeous-puberulous outside, lobed to the middle, lobes deltate.. Petals ±1.4 cm. long, sparsely and minutely puberulous outside.. Staminal tube ± 1 cm. long, slightly expanded distally, glabrous inside for 0.25 cm. below insertion of the anthers; appendages fused to form a subentire frill completely concealing the anthers.. Ovary 5–6-locular; style 1.2 cm. long; style-head thistle-shaped.. Capsule orange, depressed-globose, ± 0.9 × 1 cm., shallowly sulcate, thinly woody, glabrous.. Seeds ± 0.4 × 0.25 cm., black; aril orange or vermilion.
