Characteristics

A shrub or small tree to 4.5 m. tall.. Leaf-lamina elliptic to lanceolate-elliptic, up to 13.5 × 6.5 cm., coriaceous, glabrous except for scattered hairs on the midrib and lateral veins and tufts of hairs in their axils beneath, apex shortly acuminate, base usually cuneate; petiole up to 1 cm. long.. Inflorescence axillary, a (2–)3(–4)-flowered cyme; peduncle up to 1.5 cm. long, glabrous, stout; pedicels 1.3–2 cm. long, glabrous, stoutish; bracts up to 0.3 cm. long, puberulous, deltate.. Flowers white, fading to yellow.. Calyx 0.4–0.6 cm. long, almost glabrous except for the densely puberulous, short and broadly obtuse teeth.. Petals linear-spathulate, 2–2.8 × 0.4–0.5 cm., minutely puberulous towards the apex outside, otherwise glabrous.. Staminal tube 1.6–2.2 cm. long, glabrous inside immediately below the insertion of the filaments, otherwise densely hairy with longish hairs in the remainder of the upper half inside; appendages fused for their entire length to form an irregularly lobed frill 0.35 cm. long beyond the insertion of the filaments, completely concealing the anthers.. Ovary (4–)5(–6)-locular, glabrous; style 2.1–3 cm. long, glabrous; style-head ovoid or obovoid.. Capsule depressed-globose, up to 1.2 × 1.4 cm., sulcate, thinly woody, glabrous.. Seeds black; aril red.
