Characteristics

Perennials with much branched irregular tuberous base producing many short branches rarely up to 0.2 m long with pale flaking bark, usually forming dense mats under rock faces. Leaves oblanceolate to elliptic, 4-12(-15) x 3-8 mm, cuneate, obtuse or rounded at apex, dorsiventrally compressed with a distinct central groove, covered with few glandular hairs, glabrous later, grey-green to rarely brown. Inflorescence a thyrse with 1 or 2 monochasia, each with one, rarely more than one flower (sometimes in cultivation), with few glandular hairs; peduncle 8-20 mm long, purplish brown; pedicels 6-15 mm long. Calyx 2.5-3.5 mm long, glandular-puberulous, yellowish green; lobes narrowly triangular, sharply acute. Corolla glabrous outside; tube cylindrical to slightly broadened at mouth, 9-11 mm long, inside with a few scattered hairs, yellowish green; lobes 4-5 mm long, recurved, pink to rarely white. Anthers 1.3-1.4 mm long. Squamae oblong, 1.2-1.4 x 0.3-0.4 mm, emarginate, slightly fleshy, yellow.

Like T. torulosus but branches shorter, leaves oblanceolate to elliptic, 4-12 x 3-8 mm, sparsely glandular-pubescent and later glabrous. Flowers ± upright, in a sparsely glandular-pubescent inflorescence, with peduncle 8-20 mm long, corolla tube 9-11 mm long, lobes pink to white.
