Characteristics

Perennial herb, up to 400 mm high; mat-forming. Leaves crowded in rosettes; blade pinnatifid or bipinnatifid, lobes short, broad, apices apiculate; base petiole-like; glandular-punctate, glabrous. Heads radiate, solitary, terminal, scape (peduncle) long, bracteate. Involucral bracts in several series, imbricate, inner with broad, rounded, scarious apex. Receptacle paleate. Flowers: ray florets yellow above, often reddish below; disc florets yellow; Dec.-Feb. Fruit with cypsela straight or slightly curved, narrowly turbinate, ribbed, basal coma of long, delicate hairs. Pappus uniseriate, of 5 broad, white, membranous scales only.

Capitula solitary; peduncles long with many bracts; involucral bracts glabrous, glandular, with black margins; outer linear, apex lanceolate; middle oblong, apex ± round; inner with round appendages.
