Characteristics

Perennial herb, up to 250 mm high; procumbent or erect, mat-forming. Leaves alternate, often crowded at branch tips, petiolate; blade pinnatipartite, lobes linear, abruptly contracted, mucronate; rarely linear with entire margins. Heads radiate, solitary, terminal; peduncle long, nude. Involucral bracts in several series, imbricate, margins brown, inner bracts with broad, rounded, membranous apex. Receptacle paleate. Flowers: ray florets yellow above, coppery or reddish below, rarely yellow on both sides; disc florets yellow; Nov.-Apr. Fruit with cypsela curved almost 90°, ribbed, glabrous, basal tuft of hairs absent. Pappus biseriate, outer row of 5 broad, membranous scales and inner row of narrow, linear scales.
