Perennial herb, up to 700 mm high, tufted. Leaves crowded in rosette or alternate; blade pinnatipartite or apex tripartite, lobes linear, slender, mucronate; blade rarely linear with entire margin. Heads radiate, solitary, terminal, scape long, nude or with very few small bracts. Involucral bracts in several series, imbricate; inner bracts with broad, rounded, membranous apex. Receptacle paleate. Flowers: ray florets with lower surface coppery, rarely pale yellow, upper pale yellow; disc florets yellow; Nov.-Apr. Fruit with cypsela straight or slightly curved, with basal tuft of hairs. Pappus uniseriate, of 5 broad, white, membranous scales only.
