Characteristics

Liane, scandent shrub or small or medium-sized tree 2–6(–9) m. tall; branches at first stellate-pubescent, later glabrous, lenticellate, purplish-brown.. Leaf-blades oblong-elliptic, narrowly oblong or oblong-obovate, (5–)6–14(–16.5) cm. long, (1.6–)2.5–5.5 cm. wide, obtuse, acute or shortly acuminate at the apex, cuneate or rounded at the base, subcoriaceous, very young leaves sericeous, the margins and midrib ferruginous, the rest with adpressed silvery simple hairs, later glabrous or glabrescent save for puberulous midrib or with very fine simple hairs beneath; nerves raised above and beneath; petiole 2–4 mm. long, glabrous or pubescent.. Flowers solitary orrarely in short 2-flowered cymes, terminal or extra-axillary; pedicels 0.7–2.5 cm. long, ferruginous tomentose; bracteoles not seen, very deciduous.. Calyx-lobes ovate or triangular-ovate, 0.8–1.3 cm. long, 7–9 mm. wide, obtuse or acute, tomentose on both surfaces.. Petals yellow, yellow-green or yellow-brown, sometimes rose-coloured at the base, subequal, ovate to broadly ovate, 1.2–2.5 cm. long, 1.1–1.9 cm. wide, tomentose outside, glabrous inside.. Stamens linear, ± 1 mm. long, the connective truncate or rounded above.. Fruiting pedicels 2–2.8 cm. long; monocarps 20–80, globose, subglobose or ellipsoid, 1–1.5 cm. long, 0.8–1.2 cm. wide, 2-seeded, not contracted between the seeds, covered with a fine pale brown stellate tomentum, finely rugulose; stipes 3–5.5 cm. long.. Seeds ovoid, flattened, 6–8 mm. long, 4 mm. wide, 2 mm. thick.. Fig. 2/3, p. 11.
More
Leaves petiolate; lamina 7–13 (16) x 3–5.4 cm., elliptic to oblong or oblanceolate, obtuse to acute or shortly acuminate at the apex, cuneate to rounded at the base, coriaceous, bright green, concolorous, glabrous on both sides except sometimes along the midrib, with lateral nerves and densely reticulate venation prominent on both surfaces; petiole 2.5–4 mm. long, rusty-pubescent or almost glabrous.
Fruit on a pedicel 20–28 mm. long; ripe carpels numerous (c. 20–80), 1–1.5 x 0.8–1.2 cm., 2-seeded, globose or broadly ovoid, not apiculate, not constricted between the seeds, orange, rusty-tomentellous, finely rugose, with stipes 30–50 mm. long.
Petals yellow or brownish-yellow, sometimes pinkish at the base, somewhat fleshy, subequal, 12–22 mm. long, ovate or broadly ovate, glabrous above, tomentellous below, ciliate round the margin.
Sepals 8–13 mm. long, ± free to the base, covering the petals in bud and separating at anthesis, ovate, often cucullate, acute or obtuse, rusty-tomentellous on both surfaces.
Stamens c. 1 mm. long, linear or obconic, glabrous or pubescent along the midline; connective-prolongation broadened, truncate or rarely rounded.
Flowers terminal or extra-axillary, solitary or rarely in cymose pairs; pedicels 1–2.8 cm. long, rusty-tomentellous; bracteoles soon caducous.
It can be a shrub, tree or climber. It grows 2-4 m high. The branches have rusty hairs. The leaf blade is 7-13 cm long by 3-5 cm wide.
Branches rusty-pubescent or rusty-puberulent at first, eventually glabrous.
Shrub, tree or liane, 2–4 m. high (or higher?).
Seeds c. 6–8 mm. long, plano-ovoid.
Carpels tomentose.
