Characteristics

Stems 0.5–1 m long, branching from base. Leaves strap-like, 200–400 × 30–40 mm, numerous, in 2 ranks, crowded, erect to decurved, thick, leathery, dark green to yellowish green, apex unequally notched. Racemes 100–200 mm long, stiff, 3–7-flowered. Flowers round, 30–35 × 30–35 mm, shiny brown with greenish to yellow margins and a prominent white column. Sepals and petals widely spreading, base narrowed, margins wavy. Dorsal sepal 14–16 × 8–10 mm. Lateral sepals 14–16 × 8–10 mm. Petals 14–16 × 7–9 mm. Labellum 12–14 × 7–8 mm; lateral lobes crescent-shaped, c. 3 × 2 mm; midlobe c. 7 × 4 mm, base narrowed, with spur c. 4 mm long, apex notched.

Environment

Highly localised; found growing on trees in humid forests and on rocks among low shrubs on slopes near streams. This large orchid is frequently seen perched high in large trees in vine forests and gallery forests, forming tangled clumps with its thick, white roots extending a long way down the host's trunk. It has also been found growing in full sun on large granite boulders and other rock outcrops.
