Characteristics

Slender, little-branched erect annual herb 30–110 cm tall; stems finely pubescent with short T-shaped and asymmetrically T-shaped hairs.. Leaves sessile, elliptic or ovate, 4–15 cm long, 1–6 cm wide, cuneate-attenuate or attenuate into petioloid base, sinuate-serrate, acuminate or obtuse and apiculate, thinly finely pubescent and sometimes scabridulous, glabrescent.. Capitula in lax few-headed terminal corymbiform cymes; stalks of individual capitula shortly finely pubescent; involucre urceolate, 10–19 mm long; phyllaries 3–4-seriate, lanceolate, 5–15 mm long, acute, pale green with darker apices, margins pallid, finely shortly ascending-pubescent.. Corolla blue-purple, mauve or white, 6–11 mm long, lobes 2–3 mm long, glabrous or with a few minute hairs near apex.. Achenes 3.5–3.7 mm long, 7-ribbed, ascending-pubescent; outer pappus of narrow laciniate scales, 0.2–0.7 mm long, inner pappus pure white, 5–6.5 mm long.

Leaves membranous, sessile or shortly petiolate, up to c. 16 x 6.5 cm., elliptic, tapering to an acuminate apex and a cuneate base, serrate crenate or subentire; upper surface with scattered small flagelliform hairs, lower surface sparsely thinly puberulous with short-stalked T-shaped hairs.
Phyllaries many, stiff chartaceous, gently tapering to a pungent apex, ± narrowly membranous on the margins, hispidulous outside; outer phyllaries short, subulate-lanceolate, ± spreading, hispid; inner phyllaries to c. 15 mm. long, narrowly lanceolate, aristate.
Achenes 3–4 mm. long, narrowly obovoid-cylindric, narrowly sharply 6-ribbed, strigose; outer pappus of short barbellate lanceolate-acuminate scales, inner of± caducous white barbellate setae 6–8 mm. long.
Corollas white or purplish, c. 8 mm. long, tubular but slightly wider towards the apex, pubescent and glandular except near the base of the tube; lobes linear, 1.5 mm. long.
Stems simple below, branched above, faintly ribbed, oppressed puberulous; hairs short-stalked T-shaped.
Involucre up to c. 15 mm. long, campanulate, exceeding the pappus.
Capitula few to many, ± laxly corymbiform cymose on the branches.
