Characteristics

Achenes stramineous, 4–5 mm. long, narrowly cylindric with c. 10 pronounced narrow ribs, sparsely puberulous and glandular between the ribs, or somewhat glabrescent; outer pappus of linear, scale-like, barbellate setae to c. 2 mm. long, inner of brownish, barbellate setae to c. 10 mm. long.

Leaves sessile, to c. 5.5 x 1.4 cm., narrowly oblong to oblong-lanceolate or somewhat elliptic, apices obtuse or subacute, bases rounded to cuneate, margins entire to obscurely serrulate, gland-pitted and sparsely finely pilose on both surfaces, lateral veins almost parallel to midrib.
Phyllaries many-seriate, acute, thinly sparsely pilose to pubescent and glandular outside, margins ciliate; the outer phyllaries from c. 5 mm. long and narrowly lanceolate, the inner to c. 15 mm. long and narrowly-lanceolate to strap-shaped.
Stems annual, several, simple, ± zigzag, leafy, finely striate, thinly whitish-tomentose or pubescent, glandular, ± lanate at the rootcrown.
Capitula solitary and terminal on stems; involucres to c. 15 x 25 mm., campanulate to hemispheric.
An erect perennial herb to c. 28 cm. tall, from a woody rootstock.
