Characteristics

Phyllaries numerous, longer towards the inside, greenish to stramineous, dark-purple along the midrib, sometimes purplish apically, white pilose to slightly woolly, ciliate on the margins, apical bristles 1–3 mm. long; the outer series subulate to linear-lanceolate with pungent apices, the outermost ± curved or reflexed; the middle phyllaries narrowly lanceolate, gently tapering to a long ± straight pungent bristle; the inner phyllaries up to c. 8 mm. long, narrowly oblong-lanceolate, acuminate or abruptly narrowed, shortly bristle-tipped.

Achenes blackish when mature, up to c. 2.5 mm. long, subcylindric and tapering somewhat to the base, 4–6-angular, densely strigose; outer pappus of short oblong scales up to 0.5 mm. long; inner pappus of greyish, somewhat flattened, barbellate setae 3–4 mm. long.
Leaves up to c. 8 cm. long, linear to filiform, mucronulate, strongly revolute on the margins; lamina finely pubescent, sometimes sparsely so, minutely gland-pitted.
Stem much branched, leafy, appressed pubescent; hairs short-stalked one-armed T-shaped, the terminal cell flattened; branches up to c. 30 cm. long, similar to stem.
Capitula numerous, laxly subpaniculately arranged with 1–5 capitula per branch; stalks 1.5–8 cm. long, appressed pubescent.
Corollas purple, c. 8 mm. long, narrowly tubular, widening towards the apex.
Involucres up to c. 9 x 9 mm., narrowly campanulate to obconic.
A bushy annual herb up to 1 m. tall, usually shorter.
