Woody herb or shrub 0.4-4.5 m tall, sometimes scandent; branches spreading, somewhat pendulous; stems densely tomentose with brownish shaggy simple hairs, when older with brown or grey lenticellular bark.. Leaves petiolate, elliptic or ovate, 4.5-20 cm long, 2.4-13.5 cm wide, base cuneate to rounded, margins ± coarsely sinuate-serrate with apiculate teeth, apex acuminate to attenuate, thinly shortly pubescent or scabridulous above, ± white-or grey-tomentose beneath; petiole 0.8-2.8 cm long.. Capitula in rather dense somewhat scorpioid terminal corymbiform cymes; stalks of individual capitula densely tomentose; involucre campanulate, 6-10 mm long; phyllaries 4-seriate, spreading, green, darker towards the midrib in upper part, (narrowly) ovate, 5.5-9.5 mm long, acuminate or attenuate-pungent, tomentose with white or pale brown hairs at least in the lower part in the outer, the inner glabrous and often tinged purple or pink in upper part.. Corolla white or pale mauve, 6.5-9.5 mm long, lobes 1.5-2.5 mm long, glabrous, glandular.. Achenes 3-3.5 mm long, strongly 10-ribbed, shortly ascending-pubescent; outer pappus of broadly lanceolate laciniate scales 0.5-1.2 mm long, inner pappus slightly tawny, 5.5-7 mm long.

Involucre c. 8 mm. long, obconic; phyllaries spreading, increasing in length to the inside, lanceolate-acuminate, margins whitish-membranous, outermost phyllaries villous-araneose, the remainder glabrescent outside.
