Characteristics

Woody perennial herb or weak shrub about 3 m tall; stems thinly pubescent with asymmetrical T-shaped hairs.. Leaves shortly petiolate or sessile, narrowly elliptic, 5-22 cm long, 0.8-3 cm wide, narrowing towards the expanded-auriculate base but often with a short petiole to 5 mm, margins serrate, apex acuminate, somewhat coriaceous, somewhat scabrid and glabrescent above, densely pale tomentose beneath.. Capitula in elongated compound terminal thyrses; stalks of individual capitula pubescent; involucre cylindrical, 6.5-8 mm long; phyllaries 5-seriate, green in lower part, dark green medially in upper part, thinly floccose when young, broadly ovate, rounded, the inner oblong, minutely apiculate, 6 mm long.. Florets ± 7 per capitulum; corolla mauve, 9.5 mm long, lobes 2.5 mm long, glabrous.. Achenes (immature) densely ascending-villous; outer pappus 1.2 mm long, inner pappus white, 7 mm long.
