Leaves subsessile, to c. 12.5 x 4 cm., narrowly elliptic-oblanceolate, apex acute, base tapering-cuneate, margins serrate; lamina thinly coriaceous, green and sparsely finely pilose-pubescent on the upper surface, paler and more densely pilose-pubescent beneath especially on the midrib, venation closely reticulate and strongly raised on the lower surface.
An erect tough perennial herb or subshrub, to c. 75 cm. tall from a woody rootstock; tuberous-rooted? Stems annual, usually solitary, becoming woody below, simple or branching above, densely leafy, striate, silvery-white tomentose; hairs shortly-stalked with an elongate oblique terminal cell.
Achenes 2–3 mm. long, subcylindric, tapering somewhat below, 10-ribbed (or 20-ribbed with the development of secondary ribs), strigose-hispid; pappus several-seriate, copious, caducous, setae flattened and barbellate increasing from c. 2 mm. long on the outside to c. 10 mm. long inside.
Capitula numerous in congested clusters up to c. 8 cm. across, terminal on stem and branches; synflorescence branches leafy, felted-tomentellous; capitula stalks 0 or up to c. 10 mm. long.
Corollas pale-mauve to white, 14–17 mm. long, slender-tubular below, abruptly widening into a cylindric limb well exserted above the pappus.
Involucres 10–15 x 5–10 mm., narrowly obconic-campanulate.
Florets c. 7–15 per capitulum.
