Phyllaries few-seriate, somewhat loosely arranged, becoming caducous, the inner being shed first, ± lanceolate, scarious, densely appressed sericeous-lanate where exposed outside, midrib becoming somewhat pronounced and purplish towards the apex and usually continued into a stiff point; the outer phyllaries from c. 2 mm. long; the inner phyllaries to c. 7 mm. long, acute mucronate or acuminate.
Achenes 3–4 mm. long, subcylindric, ± tapering to the base, c. 8-ribbed, sparsely hispidulous; outer pappus of short, barbellate setae, inner of sordid, barbellate setae c. 6 mm. long.
Capitula numerous small solitary, subsessile on abbreviated tomentose bracteate shoots, in spike-like synflorescences c. 30 cm. long; bracts leaf-like, to c. 4 mm. long.
Branches purplish, simple, flagelliform, appressed-pubescent, ± glabrescent; indumentum of short-stalked long-armed T-shaped hairs.
Florets c. 10 per capitulum; corollas purple, to c. 7 mm. long, gradually widening from near the base.
Involucres c. 8 mm. long, obconic, soon spreading.
A lax subshrub to c. 1 m. tall.
