Characteristics

Basal leaves 3–12 x 0.8–3.5 cm., obovate to oblanceolate, apex subacute to obtuse, sometimes rounded, base narrowly cuneate, gently tapering into a short petiole, margins subentire to serrate-crenate, lamina thinly pubescent above, less densely so below; upper leaves smaller and narrower.

Involucres 5–6 x 5 mm., campanulate; phyllaries several-seriate, remaining ± appressed-imbricate, purplish-tipped and thinly puberulent, the outer c. 2 mm. long and subulate to linear-lanceolate, the inner up to c. 5 mm. long and narrowly oblong-lanceolate, acuminate.
Stems scapiform, annual, very densely golden-strigose above, less densely so below, the hairs T-shaped, leaves mostly subrosulate or crowded near the base, with 1–3 leaves cauline.
Achenes up to c. 3 mm. long, narrowly subcylindric, densely hispidulous; outer pappus reduced to a very short fringe of linear scales, inner pappus of copious setae 4–5 mm. long.
An erect subscapose perennial herb, up to c. 30 cm. tall from a slender vertical woody rootstock with many lateral roots.
Capitula 3–11 in a ± congested terminal cluster; stalks 1–8 mm. long, densely strigose.
Corollas purple, c. 7 mm. long, narrowly funnel-shaped.
