Perennial herb or subshrub 1.2-2.6 m tall; stems densely brown-pubescent with T-shaped and asymmetrically T-shaped hairs.. Leaves sessile or petiolate, elliptic to broadly lanceolate, 5-16 cm long, 1.2-5 cm wide, base cuneate or attenuate into a petioloid base, margins entire or serrate, apex acute to acuminate, apiculate, pubescent and glabrescent above, tomentellous to finely pubescent beneath.. Capitula in small rather lax terminal compound corymbiform cymes; stalks of individual capitula ascending-pubescent; involucre broadly campanulate, 10-15 mm long; phyllaries 4-seriate, ovate to lanceolate, 2-13 mm long, acute or with a recurved bristle, puberulous to pubescent, hyaline-margined.. Corolla purple, pale mauve or whitish, ± 10 mm long, lobes ± 3 mm long, glandular-puberulent or glabrous.. Achenes 3 mm long, strongly 8-10-ribbed, ascending-pubescent and glandular between the ribs; outer pappus of oblong scales 0.6-0.9 mm long, inner pappus stramineous, 5-8 mm long.

Involucre 10–15 mm. long, broadly campanulate; phyllaries imbricate, outermost shortly ovate to lanceolate and recurved subulate or bristle-tipped, middle phyllaries lanceolate with or without a curved apical bristle up to c. 8 mm. long, innermost to c. 13 mm. long, linear-oblong, ± expanded membranous and aristate or mucronate apically, purplish towards the apex, pubescent or puberulent outside, margins ciliate to strongly pectinate.
