Characteristics

Leaves sessile, to c. 7 x 1.2 cm., narrowly oblanceolate to narrowly oblong-oblanceolate, apices obtuse, bases tapering or narrowly cuneate, margins subentire to sparsely subserrate, finely white pilose-pubescent to glabrescent on both surfaces, minutely glandular-punctate; lateral veins arising at an acute angle and almost parallel to the midrib.

Phyllaries many-seriate, chartaceous or thinly coriaceous, acute-acuminate, appressed-pubescent and glandular outside with ciliate margins, or glabrescent; outer phyllaries from c. 5 mm. long and narrowly lanceolate, middle phyllaries to c. 4 mm. wide and oblong-lanceolate; the inner phyllaries narrower, to c. 18 mm. long and strap-shaped.
Achenes stramineous, to c. 9 mm. long, narrowly cylindric to subfusiform with c. 10 pronounced, narrow, wing-like ribs, glandular otherwise glabrous; outer pappus of scale-like barbellate setae to c. 1.5 mm. long, inner pappus of greenish-stramineous or sordid, barbellate setae to c. 11 mm. long.
Stems annual, several, simple, sulcate, leafy, softly white-pilose to glabrescent, at first lanate at the base.
An erect perennial herb to c. 20 cm. tall, from a thick succulent brittle rootstock with tuberous roots.
Capitula solitary, rarely 2, terminal on the stem; involucres to c. 18 x 20–30 mm., widely obconic.
Corollas ?purple, to c. 11 mm. long, funnel-shaped.
