Characteristics

Leaves 4–8, basal subsessile, to c. 4 x 2.5 cm. (Pfully expanded), elliptic to broadly obovate, apices rounded, bases cuneate or ± tapering to a winged midrib, margins entire, lamina membranous, glabrous on upper surface, lanate or ± pilose on lower surface; hairs patent flagelliform.

Phyllaries several-seriate, purple-brown chartaceous, outer from c. 5 mm. long, lanceolate-acuminate, sparsely puberulous to glabrous outside; the inner to c. 14 mm. long, lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, cuspidate to tapering-acuminate at apex.
Achenes (immature) to c. 5 mm. long, narrowly subcylindric with 8–10 narrow wing-like ribs, glabrous; outer pappus of short barbellate setae, inner of clear green barbellate setae c.7 mm. long.
Stems scapiform, annual, usually reddish, solitary with leaves subrosulate at or just above the base, otherwise leafless, striate, lanate, becoming sparsely pilose; bracts 0–2, linear-elliptic.
An erect perennial herb, 7–26 cm. tall from a woody rootstock; roots thong-like, spreading.
Capitulum solitary, involucre 12–15 x c. 12(25) mm., campanulate to widely spreading.
