Achenes 3–4 mm. long, broadly subcylindric and tapering slightly to the base, 10-ribbed, with a thin flat annular carpopodium, ± densely strigose-hispid, pappus several-seriate, copious somewhat caducous, setae pale-brownish, barbellate on the margins, c. 2 mm. long and subulate-paleate on outside increasing to c. 16 mm. long on inside, flattened and slightly ribbon-like.
Leaves sessile, to c. 16 x 4 cm., ± oblanceolate to narrowly elliptic, acute at apex, cuneate at base, margins crenate-serrate; lamina thinly coriaceous, finely pubescent on both surfaces usually more densely so beneath, soon glabrescent, glandular beneath; venation finely reticulate and markedly prominent beneath.
A stout erect tough perennial herb, to c. 1 m. tall from a large woody rootstock; tuberous-rooted? Stems annual, usually solitary, simple or sparingly branched near the apex, densely leafy, strongly striate, greyish-tomentellous.
Capitula c. 5–12 in lax clusters, or solitary on short ± leafy branches; bracts leaf-like, to c. 4 x 2 cm., subtending and equal to, or overtopping the capitula.
Corollas mauve fading to creamy-white, c. 22 mm. long, long slender tubular below abruptly widening into a short cylindric limb exserted above the pappus.
Involucres c. 20 x 20 mm., spreading to c. 30 mm. wide, campanulate.
Florets c. 30 per capitulum.
