Characteristics

Leaves entire or some 3-lobed, subsessile, usually with a short pubescent petiole c. 3 mm. long; lamina up to c. 5.5 x 1 cm., narrowly oblong-elliptic, or 3-lobed up to c. 1.5 cm. wide and ± obovate in outline, obtuse or acute at leaf or lobe apex, cuneate at base, entire or obscurely crenate, scabridulous on upper surface and sparsely pilose or glabrescent beneath; lateral lobes 5–10 x 2–3 mm., pointing forwards; terminal lobe broader, c. 15 x 20 mm. long.

Involucre up to c. 10 x 6 mm., narrowly campanulate; phyllaries appressed, increasing in size from c. 2 mm. on the outside to c. 9 mm. long inside, lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, finely pilose-pubescent Corollas purple, c. 7.5 mm. long, tubular in the lower half, narrowly funnel-shaped above, sparsely pilose.
Achenes (immature) 2 mm. long, 5-ribbed, setulose, outer pappus of short lanceolate-fimbriate scales, inner of whitish barbellate setae c. 6 mm. long.
Capitula numerous, laxly paniculate on many slender branches 5–9 mm. long; stalks slender up to c. 3 mm. long, pubescent.
Stems erect, simple or branched above, longitudinally ribbed, puberulous.
A slender annual herb to c. 80 cm. tall.
