Characteristics

Leaves often purple-tinged, ± coriaceous when dry, midrib prominent beneath; basal leaves subrosulate or crowded, up to c. 8.5 x 0.5 cm., linear-oblanceolate, apex acute, base long attenuate, margins entire and ± revolute, midrib glabrous or pubescent; upper cauline leaves decreasing in size towards the stem apex, narrowly strap-shaped.

Achenes 1.5–2.3 mm. long, oblong-turbinate, 4–5-angular, ribbed on the angles, densely strigose on the ribs, rugulose on the faces; outer pappus of broad lanceolate-acuminate brownish scales c. 2 mm. long; the inner of subplumose, sordid or purple-tinged setae c. 7 mm. long.
Phyllaries purplish, numerous, increasing in length towards the inside, coriaceous, pilose or araneose above or glabrescent; outer phyllaries recurved, subulate; inner phyllaries up to c. 13 mm. long, linear-lanceolate, ± apiculate.
Corolla purple or violet, c. 10 mm. long, pubescent outside; lobes 1–2 mm. long, linear, acute, strigillous near the tip.
Capitula 1, or up to c. 8 corymbiformly cymose on stalks 1–6 cm. long; involucre c. 13 mm. long, broadly obconic.
Stems purplish, 1-many, simple, ribbed, swelling somewhat at the base, appressed-pubescent or glabrescent.
An erect slender perennial herb up to 40 cm. tall from a thickened rootstock, lanate at the rootcrown.
