Characteristics

Phyllaries many-seriate, progressively longer towards the inside, greenish-stramineous, the tips dark-green or purplish, hispidulous to glabrescent, margins pectinate-denticulate orpungent-ciliate; the outer phyllaries from c. 2 mm. long, linear-lanceolate, acute mucronulate; the inner phyllaries up to c. 15 mm. long, narrowly oblong and somewhat tapered or abruptly narrowed to a mucronulate apex.

Lower leaves with petioles up to c. 6 mm. long, other leaves subsessile; lamina 1.5–8 x 0.5–2.5 cm., narrowly oblong-elliptic to oblong-oblanceolate, apices acute to rounded, bases cuneate, margins strongly serrate to subentire, pubescent soon glabrescent, minutely glandular-punctate.
Achenes purplish-brown when mature, 6–8 mm. long, narrowly subcylindrical to subfusiform, c. 10-ribbed, strigose-hispid; outer pappus of irregular, narrow, scale-like setae 1–3 mm. long; inner pappus of brown, purplish-tinged or sordid ± flattened, subplumose setae 8–11 mm. long.
Capitula many, large, laxly arranged, terminal and solitary on the branches, or 2–4 corymbiformly cymose on long stalks at the ends of the branches; stalks (1)3–10 cm. long, ascending, usually bracteate; bracts up to c. 5 mm. long linear, scale-like.
Corollas cornflower-blue or mauve, up to c. 18 mm. long, narrowly tubular, gradually widening to a deeply lobed limb.
Stems annual, 1-several, somewhat decumbent, branched, leafy, white-woolly or pubescent at first soon ± glabrescent.
A low-growing perennial herb, up to c. 43 cm. tall from a woody rootstock.
