Leaves many, ascending, sessile, 8–25 x 1–2(5) cm., linear-oblanceolate to oblanceolate, ± narrowly tapering-acute at apex, attenuate to a narrowly cuneate base, margins entire to remotely repand-crenulate, lamina coriaceous, glabrous or minutely sparsely puberulous, nervation laxly reticulate, slightly raised.
Achenes to c. 8 mm. long, subcylindric with c. 8 narrow, raised ribs, glabrous, glandular; outer pappus of linear, fimbriate scales c. 4 mm. long, inner of white, plumose, slightly flattened setae 10–13 mm. long.
Capitula 1–4, corymbiform cymose, sometimes solitary; stalks to c. 9.5 cm. long, bracteate; involucres 2–2.5 x 3–4.5 cm., broadly campanulate to subhemispheric.
Stems annual erect simple leafy ± angular, very strongly ribbed and becoming deeply sulcate above, sparsely puberulous, soon glabrescent.
A robust perennial herb to c. 60 cm. tall from a woody, fibrous-rooted rootstock.
