Characteristics

Leaves sessile, the lower cauline leaves crowded, the lowermost radical, c. 6 x 0.8 cm., narrowly lorate-oblanceolate or linear, apex acute, base widening and semi-amplexicaul, pilose on both surfaces, becoming scabridulous; upper cauline leaves diminishing in size up the stem, lanceolate to very narrowly triangular, the apices tapering acute, bases ± stem-clasping, densely pilose.

Achene pale-brown, c. 2 mm. long, oblong-turbinate, 4–5-ribbed, densely setose at the base and along the ribs; outer pappus of narrow scale-like setae, c. 2.5 mm. long; the inner pappus of barbellate setae c. 9 mm. long, rose-coloured in the upper part.
Capitula 1–9, crowded at the stem apex, ± cymosely arranged, the central capitulum overtopped by the lateral capitula; stalks stout and shortly villous.
Phyllaries very numerous, increasing in length towards the inside, linear-lanceolate with dark subulate tips, densely pale grey-villous.
A stout erect perennial herb up to c. 30 cm. tall, from a thickened rootstock with spreading fibrous roots.
Involucre up to c. 15 mm. long, broadly campanulate to spreading.
Corollas mauve, c. 10 mm. long, very narrowly funnel-shaped.
Receptacle alveolate, alveolae walls long-toothed.
Stems densely pale-villous.
