Characteristics

Shrub 1.5–4 m tall; stems grey, bark slightly warted, young stems finely tomentose, sometimes also with longer spreading hairs.. Leaves sessile, ovate or lanceolate, 7.5–35 cm long, 3.5–11 cm wide, attenuate on to a winged auriculate or exauriculate petioloid base, margins coarsely serrate, apex acuminate, thinly crispate-pubescent and ± glabrescent above, thinly finely pubescent especially on veins beneath.. Capitula many, in large terminal lax corymbs; involucre 11–15 mm long; phyllaries 3–4-seriate, the outer green, with narrowly lanceolate appendages, the median and inner oblong, with white lanceolate appendages, the longest phyllaries 11–14 mm long; appendages 7–11 mm long, 2.5–3.8 mm wide.. Corolla purple, lilac or white, 10.5–12 mm long, lobes 1.7–2 mm long.. Achenes 3.7 mm long, sparsely minutely ascending-pubescent; pappus 9.5–11 mm long.
