Characteristics

Phyllaries appressed-imbricate, equalling the pappus in length, araneose-pubescent, the hairs on the apical part of the phyllaries often brownish, margins ciliate-pilose above; outermost phyllaries ovate to oblong and acute-mucronate; the inner phyllaries longer, lanceolate-oblong; the innermost phyllaries ± appendaged with the apex expanded purplish-hyaline and minutely anstate.

Leaves ± subsessile, ± crowded, up to 55 x 2.8 mm., linear, much smaller on branches and abbreviated shoots, apex obtuse mucronate, margins entire and revolute, lamina glandular-punctate, hispidulous to scabridulous.
Achenes pale-brown, c. 2.5–2.75 mm. long, obpyramidal, 4–5-ribbed, hispidulous on me ribs and glandular between; outer pappus of short, narrow, brownish scales, the inner of brownish, barbellate setae 4–5 mm. long.
Capitula few to numerous, racemose or laxly paniculate; involucres up to c. 10 mm. long, hemispheric-campanulate, ± wider than long.
A bushy perennial herb up to c. 50(75) cm. tall from a small woody rootstock.
