Herb with perennial woody rhizome and annual, densely tufted, erect to somewhat decumbent stems 15–50 cm tall; stems finely pubescent with simple hairs.. Leaves sessile, ovate, 1–2.5 cm long, 0.4–1.6 cm wide, base ± cordate and semi-amplexicaul, apex acute or obtuse and apiculate, densely finely ascending-pubescent and with scabridulous slightly revolute margins, densely glandular on both surfaces.. Capitula in small terminal corymbiform cymes; stalks of individual capitula densely ascending-pubescent; involucre 5–9 mm long; phyllaries 3–4-seriate, lanceolate or oblong, 3–7 mm long, obtuse to acute, the outer densely pubescent, median and inner less densely so, the inner deeply purple-tinged.. Corolla purple or mauve, 5–6(–7) mm long, lobes 1.5–2(–3) mm long, with short stiff hairs along their lengths.. Achenes 1.8–2.6 mm long, ascending-pubescent, obscurely ribbed; outer pappus of narrowly lanceolate scales, 1–1.6 mm long, inner pappus 4.5–5.5(–7) mm long.
