Achenes c. 3.5 mm. long, subcylindric, somewhat angular with 5–8 narrow, raised ribs, sparsely strigose to glabrous and gland-dotted; outer pappus of linear, tapering, fimbriate-ciliate, seta-like scales c. 2 mm. long, inner of copious, sordid, subplumose setae 6–7 mm. long.
Leaves many, ascending, subsessile, 5–14 x 0.6–2.8 cm., the largest midcauline, linear-elliptic to elliptic, apex acute mucronate, base cuneate, margins entire to remotely denticulate-crenulate, lamina coriaceous, glabrous, nervation reticulate and prominent on both sides.
Stems annual solitary erect wiry, leafy, branching above, somewhat angled and strongly ribbed with numerous scattered, minute, often black, glandular hairs, otherwise glabrous.
Capitula few to many, 1–2 per branch, occasionally solitary, capitula stalks stiff, up to c. 10 cm. long.
Corollas purplish, up to c. 11 mm. long, tubular, widening into a limb with lobes to c. 4 mm. long.
A tough perennial herb up to c. 65 cm. tall from a woody, fibrous-rooted rootstock.
Involucres 10–14 x 10–15 mm., broadly campanulate, later spreading.
Receptacle shallowly alveolate.
