Achenes pale-brown to blackish, 1.5–2.3 mm. long, narrowly subcylindric, truncate at the apex and abruptly tapered at the base, terete or obscurely c. 5-ribbed, ± densely white-strigose, glandular; outer pappus a short fringe of narrow fimbriate scales, inner pappus of c. 14 brownish, sometimes white, barbellate or subplumose setae 5–6 mm. long.
Leaves of the lower stem up to c. 7 x 0.9 cm., linear-oblanceolate to linear-elliptic, lamina flat or ± revolute on the margins, tapering-attenuate to the base; upper-cauline leaves smaller, linear-lorate, revolute, puberulent to scabridulous.
Phyllaries numerous, progressively longer towards the inside; the outer phyllaries lanceolate, the inner narrower, gradually tapering to a ± obtuse apex, subapically mucronate or mucro absent, ± densely brownish hispid, or glabrescent.
Stems c. 13–120 cm. tall, simple below, ± laxly branched above, ± strongly longitudinally striate; branches 4–30 cm. long, spreading, pubescent, ribbed or angled.
Involucres 8–10 mm. long, exceeding the pappus at anthesis, narrowly cylindric-campanulate, tapering to the base, not becoming widely spreading.
Corollas purplish, 6–11 mm. long, gradually tapering to the base.
Capitula numerous in large open panicles, stalks slender.
An erect annual herb.
