Characteristics

Often ± scrambling or scandent woody herb or weak shrub 0.8-4.5 m tall; stems tinged purplish, finely crispate-pubescent with asymmetrically and symmetrically T-shaped hairs, glandular.. Leaves petiolate, ovate, 4-13 cm long, 2-7.5 cm wide, base rounded, truncate or cordate and sometimes narrowly decurrent on the petiole, margins sinuate-serrate or denticulate with apiculate teeth, apex acuminate, apiculate, shortly finely thinly pubescent and glabrescent above, rather thickly tomentose to thinly finely pubescent beneath; petioles 0.7-4.2 cm long.. Capitula in copious terminal spreading sometimes scorpioid compound corymbiform cymes several cm across; stalks of individual capitula 1-10(-40) mm long, densely crispate-pubescent; involucre obconic to campanulate, 4-8 mm long; phyllaries 3-4-seriate, green, often purplish-tipped, thinly pubescent, ± glabrescent, narrowly to broadly ovate, acute or attenuate, the inner obtuse to acute, 4.3-6 mm long.. Florets 15-20 per capitulum; corolla pale to deep mauve or lilac, rarely white or pink, 6-8.5 mm long, strongly exserted, the outer often recurving, lobes 1.5-2.5 mm long, glabrous or with a few slender subapical hairs.. Achenes 2.3-3 mm long, strongly 3-6-ribbed, glabrous, glandular; outer pappus of narrow lanceolate laciniate scales, 0.3-0.8 mm long, inner pappus white, 4.5-7.5 mm long.. Fig. 38/3 (involucre), p. 168; fig. 39/2 (achene), p. 172.
More
Leaves membranous, petiolate; petiole 1–3 cm. long; lamina to 13 x 6 cm., ovate-lanceolate, apex tapering-acuminate, base broadly cuneate to truncate in upper leaves, cordate often unequally so in lower leaves, sometimes narrowly decurrent on petiole, margins serrate or serrulate, lamina upper surface sparsely pilose to scabridulous, lower surface thinly pilose; the hairs one-armed or unequal-armed T-shaped on upper surface and T-shaped beneath.
Involucres to c. 6 x 6 mm., spreading to c. 10 mm. wide, obconic-campanulate; phyllaries few-seriate, outer 2–4 mm. long and subulate to linear-lanceolate with a subulate apex, inner to 6 mm. long and narrowly oblong-elliptic, subacute mucronate or aristate, scarious sometimes with a hyaline margin, thinly pilose outside or glabrescent.
Capitula numerous, grouped in moderately dense clusters 3–6 cm. across, borne in the upper leaf axils, or capitula in large terminal compound panicles; synflorescence branches sparsely linear-bracteate; capitula stalks mostly 1–10 mm. long, sometimes to c. 40 mm. long, linear-bracteate, tomentellous to appressed-pubescent.
Achenes pale-brownish, 2.5–3 mm. long, narrowly subcylindric, tapering slightly to base, sharply narrowly 5-ribbed, glandular otherwise glabrous, at the most sparsely hispidulous; outer pappus fringe-like, of narrow minute lacerate scales, inner of white barbellate setae 5–6 mm. long.
Corollas pale-mauve to whitish, sweetly-scented, c. 6 mm. long, narrowly funnel-shaped, widening slightly to apex.
Branches alternate, striate, pubescent, glandular; indumentum of short-stalked T-shaped hairs.
A diffuse or scandent shrub with stems to c. 6 m. long.
Florets 15–20 per capitulum.
