Leaves subsessile, up to c. 13.5 x 3 cm., narrowly oblong to narrowly oblong-lanceolate, rounded or obtuse at the apex, cuneate to obtuse at the base, margins irregularly crenate or crenulate to remotely dentate; lamina discolorous, upper surface hispid, greenish, becoming bullate and scabridous, lower surface softly felted and greyish-tomentose with venation reticulate and prominent, the midrib and sometimes the veins brownish-tomentose.
Phyllaries numerous, spreading, linear-lanceolate with sharply acute purplish aristate apices, very densely strigose or woolly, increasing from c. 2 mm. long outside to c. 8 mm. long inside.
Achenes 2–2.5 mm. long, subcylindric to somewhat 4–5-angular, hispidulous; outer pappus of short, linear scales or paleaceous setae; inner pappus of white barbellate setae 7–8 mm. long.
Capitula numerous, in terminal clusters on branches, or arranged in a large panicle-like synflorescence.
Corollas purple, 5–8 mm. long, very narrowly funnel-shaped, strigose-pubescent on the lobes.
Stems annual, 1-many, branched and leafy above, terete, yellowish-brown tomentose.
An erect slender perennial herb, to c. 1 m. tall from a woody rootstock.
Involucres 7–10 mm. long, broadly obconic.
