Characteristics

Leaves subsessile, 3–8(?) x 0.8–2(?) cm., elliptic to oblanceolate, widest about or above the middle, apex acute or obtuse, base cuneate, margins repand or crenulate, lamina finely bullate, the upper surface green and thinly pilose, the lower surface densely yellowish-or grey-tomentose with a prominent reticulate venation.

Phyllaries many, several-seriate, appressed imbricate, later spreading, thinly pilose to woolly where exposed, otherwise glabrous; outer phyllaries lanceolate, the inner longer and oblong-lanceolate, abruptly contracted apically and shortly acuminate-apiculate.
Achenes 2–2.5(3) mm. long, subcylindric to turbinate, ± obscurely 6–8-ribbed, hispidulous; outer pappus of very short setae, inner pappus of barbellate setae c. 7 mm. long.
Stems annual, 1-many, branched, leafy, yellowish-brown tomentose; branches more densely leafy than the stem.
Florets c. 11; corollas mauve or purple, up to c. 7 mm. long, narrowly funnel-shaped.
Capitula many, in a condensed terminal cluster, or ± laxly subpaniculate.
An erect perennial herb up to ?1 m. tall, from a woody rootstock.
