Phyllaries many, several-seriate, appressed imbricate, later spreading, thinly pilose to woolly where exposed, otherwise glabrous; outer phyllaries lanceolate, the inner longer and oblong-lanceolate, abruptly contracted apically and shortly acuminate-apiculate.
Achenes 2–2.5(3) mm. long, subcylindric to turbinate, ± obscurely 6–8-ribbed, hispidulous; outer pappus of very short setae, inner pappus of barbellate setae c. 7 mm. long.
Stems annual, 1-many, branched, leafy, yellowish-brown tomentose; branches more densely leafy than the stem.
Florets c. 11; corollas mauve or purple, up to c. 7 mm. long, narrowly funnel-shaped.
Capitula many, in a condensed terminal cluster, or ± laxly subpaniculate.
An erect perennial herb up to ?1 m. tall, from a woody rootstock.
Involucres up to c. 6(9) x 6(10) mm., campanulate to obconic.
