Annual or perennial ± subscapose herb 40–90 cm tall; stems finely ascending-pubescent, sometimes also with spreading-crispate hairs.. Leaves mostly on the lower part of the plant, sessile, oblanceolate to oblong, 3–12 cm long, 0.3–2.8 cm wide, base cuneate to attenuate, margins remotely minutely apiculate-serrate, apex obtuse to rounded, apiculate, thinly shortly pubescent, ± glabrescent.. Capitula in lax somewhat scorpioid terminal corymbiform cymes; stalks of individual capitula densely ascending-pubescent; involucre 7–9 mm long; phyllaries 3–4-seriate, lanceolate, 2–8.5 mm long, acute, ascending-pubescent, purplish in upper part.. Corolla purple, 5.5–10 mm long, lobes 1.5–3 mm long, with stiff apical hairs.. Achenes 1.7–2.8 mm long, 4–5-angled, ascending-pubescent at least on the angles; outer pappus of lanceolate scales, 1–2 mm long, inner pappus 4.5–6.5 mm long, rather scant, violet.
