Characteristics

Perennial herb, glabrous or sparsely pubescent; stems contracted, sometimes elongating to c. 40 cm long, erect or scandent; stolons well-developed. Leaves tufted or cauline when stems developed; lamina broadly reniform, 10–15 (–25) mm long, (12–) 25–35 (–60) mm wide, base ± truncate or with a broad sinus, margins with numerous prominent teeth, apex rounded or very broadly obtuse; petiole 2–12 cm long; stipules free, narrowly to broadly triangular, 2–5 mm long, glandular-denticulate. Flower-scapes 6–25 cm long, distinctly longer than leaves; bracteoles usually below the middle, rarely above. Sepals lanceolate, 3.5–5.5 mm long, acute, basal appendages small. Petals (5–) 8–13 mm long, 2-coloured, mauve-violet near base and white near apex (rarely pale violet near apex) with a sharp demarcation between colours; anterior petal ovate to broadly ovate, widest in lower third to near the middle, mostly 5–9 mm wide, usually emarginate, with 3 prominent central parallel veins, rarely anastomosing, not spurred; lateral petals entire, twisted through 180 degrees, densely bearded in basal half. Capsule ovoid, 7–9 mm long. Seeds ovoid, 1.5–2.6 mm long, glossy purplish black.
